Calcite Precipitation at Cement–Bentonite Interface. Part 1: Effect of Carbonate Admixture in Bentonite

نویسندگان

چکیده

Calcium leaching from cementitious materials into bentonite is a key process for the long-term alteration of cement–clay interfaces engineered barrier systems. Strong chemical gradients between cement and clay drive precipitation minerals such as calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) calcite. To analyze mineralogical porosity evolution at interface, composite specimens consisting paste mixed with various amounts sodium carbonate were subjected to immersion chloride migrations tests investigated by electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), thermogravimetry/differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD) after 4–20 months immersion. The results show that adding enhanced formation calcite in form surface layer on paste. This suggests pore clogging interface implies existence threshold amount addition above which occurs. first two papers; accelerated samples presence an electrical field discussed second paper.

Urease activity in microbiologically-induced calcite precipitation.

The role of microbial urease in calcite precipitation was studied utilizing a recombinant Escherichia coli HB101 containing a plasmid, pBU11, that encodes Bacillus pasteurii urease. The calcite precipitation by E. coli HB101 (pBU11) was significant although its precipitation level was not as high as that by B. pasteurii. Addition of low concentrations (5-100 microM) of nickel, the cofactor of u...

Effect of the Experimental Parameters on Calcium Carbonate Precipitation

In this study, calcium carbonate crystals were obtained by mixing of calcium chloride and sodium carbonate in the presence of biopolymer, carboxymethyl inulin (CMI). The effect of the feed rate of reactant and the initial [Ca] concentration was investigated. The produced calcium carbonate (CaCO3) crystals were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spect...

Experimental Studies on Concrete with Bentonite as Mineral Admixture

The present investigation deals with effect of bentonite clay on concrete. The concrete was produced by partial replacement of OPC with mineral admixture bentonite clay in percentages of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%. The M20 grade of concrete was designed. The compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength were found for the specimens. The present investigation is to study the e...

Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation Employing Environmental Isolates

In this study, five microbes were employed to precipitate calcite in cohesionless soils. Four microbes were selected from calcite-precipitating microbes isolated from calcareous sand and limestone cave soils, with Sporosarcina pasteurii ATCC 11859 (standard strain) used as a control. Urease activities of the four microbes were higher than that of S. pasteurii. The microbes and urea-CaCl₂ medium...

Atomic modifications by synchrotron radiation at the calcite-ethanol interface.

This article reports on studies of the chemical alterations induced by synchrotron radiation at the calcite-ethanol interface, a simple model system for interfaces between minerals and more complex organic molecules containing OH groups. A combination of X-ray reflectivity and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of natural calcite, cleaved in distilled ethanol to obtain new clean interfaces, indic...
